Industrial Composting

Yes! Pipco baggies break down within 30 days in a commercial composting facility.

Check if your local council provides kerbside collection of compostable waste in the form of a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) wheelie bin.

HOME Composting

Beaut! Pipco baggies break down within 90 days in home compost bins.

Pipco baggies are one of the few compostable plastic bags that can be conveniently processed in your own home compost bin! They leave behind zero toxic residues and are also safe for worms to munch.

Landfill

GENERAL WASTE

Compostable plastics like Pipco baggies should ideally go into compost rather than landfill.

Pipco baggies can go in normal trash, however landfill conditions are not conducive of the proper composting process. Depending on the conditions in the landfill, biodegradation of compostable plastics may occur but it might happen very slowly, incompletely, in such a way that generates methane, or not at all (more info in FAQs below).

crossMainstream plastics recycling

MAINSTREAM Recycling

Compostable soft plastics like Pipco baggies are not recyclable with regular plastic.

The chemical structure of many compostable plastics is quite different from regular plastic, so at present they can't be processed with mainstream recycling.

crossLitter

Litter

Please don't allow Pipco baggies to become litter.

Compostable plastics require specific composting conditions to biodegrade, so if left in the open environment they aren't guaranteed to encounter the correct conditions to break down properly.

If you're home-composting doggie doo doo, the resulting compost is great to use on your ornamental plants, but it's best to avoid your edible fruit and veggie patch. While industrial composters will reach temperatures hot enough to eliminate pathogens, home composters probably won't. We don't want potential doggie-doo germs getting onto any food that you grow!

When looking for products that are better for the environment, be aware that not all 'biodegradable' plastics are the same

We put a lot of consideration into bringing you the most eco-friendly version of a plastic poop bag. In our opinion, compostability is the solution that's kindest to the Earth.

Composting is a wonderful process by which microorganisms break organic waste down into its natural base products, water + carbon dioxide + compost, a rich earthy substance used to nourish soil and plants. Although it might take a little more effort, composting essentially gives us the power to turn trash into treasure!

Be discerning when shopping for alternatives to conventional plastic. Some types of plastics are marketed as biodegradable or eco-friendly, but are not totally ideal for the environment from our perspective.

Although many compostable plastics can only be processed in commercial composting facilities (which are sadly far and few between in Australia at present) we have strived to make the barrier for use of our baggies as low as possible by ensuring they are also completely biodegradable in home compost bins.
